The Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksha Theatre is a fully equipped performance center in the city of Colombo. It is the largest performing art theatre in Sri Lanka. Nelum Pokuna theatre was inaugurated on 15 December 2011 by the former president Mahinda Rajapaksha and china’s vice President of the Chinese Republican Committee, Sang Chiang. This theatre spreads over 14,000 square meters of floor area. It plays a vital role in promoting tourism within the country and brings foreign investment to the local economy. 

This is one of the best places to visit in the heart of Colombo.

The foundation stone to the Nelum Pokuna Theatre project was laid by Chandrika Bandaranayaka Kumaratunga in 2006. It was completed the construction in 2011. The design of this theatre is inspired by the 12th century Nelum Pokuna (Lotus Pond) in Polonnaruwa. It was estimated 3080 million Sri Lankan Rupees to this massive project. People’s Republic of China provided 2430 million Sri Lankan Rupees out of the total cost.   

  • Remarks
  • Water do not allow to bring inside 
  • Small cafe is inside and you can buy snacks and cool drinks from there 
  • But they don’t allow you to take any food or beverage inside the theatre 
  • Therefore you have to fill yourself before enter to the building 
  • Atmosphere both inside and outside are awesome
